Update Chrome and ChromeOS Now: Google Fixes Critical Security Flaws

Published October 16, 2026

Google released a major Chrome and ChromeOS update fixing 247 security flaws, including four rated Critical. Some could let a malicious website run code on your device. Updating only takes a moment.

What happened

On October 6, 2026, Google released a Stable Channel Update for Chrome on desktop bringing it to version 155.0.8059.39 for Linux and 154.0.8037.39/.40 for Windows and Mac. The update includes 247 security fixes, four of them rated Critical. Google also released version 155.0.8059.39 for Android, rolling out gradually. Among the most serious flaws are use-after-free vulnerabilities in the Browser and Navigation modules that could let a remote attacker run code outside Chrome's protective sandbox simply by getting you to open a crafted webpage, plus a type confusion flaw in Chrome's JavaScript engine rated High.

Who is affected

Anyone who uses the Chrome browser on a computer, Android phone, or a Chromebook, especially older adults who may leave the browser open for long periods and miss automatic updates.

Why it matters

Browser flaws like these can let a malicious or hacked website attack your device just by loading a webpage, often without any click or download. Criminals target older adults with such sites through phishing emails and fake links. Updating closes these holes before attackers can use them, and it is one of the simplest, most effective ways to stay safe online.

Practical steps to take

  1. 1On a computer: Open Chrome, click the three-dot menu, then Help > About Google Chrome. Chrome will check for updates automatically; if one is ready, click Relaunch.
  2. 2Keep Chrome set to update automatically, but remember to close and reopen your browser now and then so updates can install.
  3. 3On a Chromebook: Connect to the internet so it can download updates, look for the 'Update device' notification near the date at the bottom right, then restart to finish.
  4. 4If you use Chrome on Android, watch for the update in Google Play; version 155.0.8059.39 is rolling out gradually.

Important dates

Update as soon as possible. The October 6, 2026 release fixes flaws that attackers could use through a malicious or compromised webpage.
